Bermuda’s top road runners, Ryan Outerbridge and Sean Trott, achieved their personal best times in the Allshores 10K Run on Saturday.

In a contest in which the impressive Andrew Wacker defended his title in 30mins 10sec, Outerbridge finished third in 31:51. Trott’s time of 33:37, a small improvement from the 33:43 he ran in the same race last year, placed him ninth overall.

Outerbridge was pleased to lower the 36:28 he ran on the same course in 2020.

“This is my PB on the road because I haven’t run a 10K on the road in a few years,” the 23-year-old told The Royal Gazette.

“It feels great to finish third overall and I was really happy with the result. I came into the race with the goal of finishing as the first local and hopefully finishing on the podium.

“I didn’t know how my body would respond after last night. I struggled to fall asleep and ended up getting just three to four hours of sleep.

“My calf started cramping up about a mile and a half to go, but I was able to pull through and hold on for third.

“This is my first time competing in the 10K in a few years and being competitive in the elite field. The competition is always high from the foreign athletes.”

Trott was pleased to shed some seconds from his time a year ago.

“The target was to beat last year’s time, so I’m happy with the progress,” the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby champion said.

“This is my PB on this course. I’ve run a 32.55 on the road before, which was in the Lindo’s to Lindo’s, but that’s not quite an official course and it may be shorter, so I would take this one as my official PB.

“The placing might not look great but I’ve continued to improve in this race. This is now four years where I’ve improved each year, so I hope I can keep this going.”

To complete the Chubb Half Bermuda Triangle Challenge, Trott is competing in the PwC Bermuda Half-Marathon on Sunday.

“At this point, I think I’ve hit my expectations so far for the weekend,” the 35-year-old said.

“On Sunday, I’m not looking for a personal best, but I do want to stay competitive and see whatever comes.”

Wacker, from Boulder, Colorado, was a shade slower than the 30:07 course record he set last year.

“I really wanted to run faster than last year, but I ran my best today and couldn’t quite get the record,” the overall winner said.

“We had a beautiful day today, it was cooler and good for running. I thought it’d be a good day to go fast, but it’s a hard course so you just do your best and every couple of seconds count.”

Coming up against JP Flavin, who ran 2hr 9min to win the 2025 Marathon Project in Chandler, Arizona, last month, the defending champion was wary of what his compatriot had up his sleeve.

“We had a really good field,” Wacker said.

“The guy who got second just ran a 2:09 in the marathon, which is world-class and he’s one of the best American marathoners.

“I was really worried about him breathing down my neck, but I came out on top today so it was fun.

“The strategy was just to go out hard. We were all tired from running the mile last night, I just had the best first mile and then kept it going.

“I was in the lead throughout so I could hear him behind me, but I just kept going. There were a lot of people cheering on the course, which was really fun and I could tell how far behind me JP was because you could hear the crowds cheering.

“I got to look back a little bit at Flatts, which is about 5K. That’s a good spot where you can kind of see where you’re at.

“I knew at that stage I had a bit of a lead. I relaxed maybe a little too much, but he stayed pretty much the same distance from there all the way to the end, so I had to work the last mile or two on the big hill.”

Wacker won the Half Challenge a year ago and is hoping for a repeat on Sunday.

“I’ve to run as hard as I can and run a fast time to beat all my competitors,” he added.

“I think I’m better at the longer stuff, so today and tomorrow are kind of my speciality. But again, I think we’ve got a couple other people who I have to worry about and it’ll be fun to race all the way through.”

In the women’s race, British runner Ellie Stevens returned to Bermuda to claim her third victory in the race. Her time of 35:17 was a bit slower than the 35:04 she clocked a year ago.

“I enjoy coming back to this beautiful island every year,” Stevens said.

“It’s such an amazing thing after Christmas and it’s nice to come back and see all the locals and get all of the support here.

“Anna and I were battling it out for the first half, so she was with me for a good 5K of the race.

“I picked up a little bit so that I could get some distance between us and then work up that last hill, which is always a killer. It’s always such a hard course, but that’s what we come for, the hills.”

Stevens is eyeing her third Half-Challenge win, with Vess, who beat her in the Butterfield Mile on Friday, standing in her way.

“Whoever wins between Anna and I wins the Calf challenge,” she added.

“I need to go for a fast time and put some distance between us.”
