Warwick Academy pick up senior schools cross-country title
Warwick Academy were crowned champions at the Senior School Cross Country Championships on Tuesday.
Warwick were comfortable winners at the Arboretum, finishing with 164 points. Saltus Grammar School finished in second with 207, while The Berkeley Institute rounded out the podium with 240 points.
Warwick cruised to the girls’ title with 83 points, followed again by Saltus with 121 and Berkeley on 128. The teams finished in the same order in the boys division with the champions scoring 81 points, Saltus finishing with 86 and Berkeley ending with 112 points.
Brooklyn Myers won the under-16 girls race to give Bermuda High School their only win of the day when she crossed the line in 13:22. Saltus’s Riana Robinson finished in second in a time of 14:17 while Lila Readdy from Warwick Academy claimed bronze in 15:32. The team honours went to BHS with 33 points, ahead of Warwick on 49 and Saltus with 65.
Sanchez Smith won the first of two Saltus gold medals by winning the under-16 boys division ahead of Berkeley Institute’s Nathan Foster-Skelton. Smith finished the race in a time of 11:23 with Foster-Skelton crossing the line in 12:00 just a second ahead of Warwick’s Jens Drea (12:01).
Foster-Skelton and his Berkeley team-mates finished top of the division with 47 points ahead of Saltus (51) and Warwick (55).
Jaeda Grant broke away after the first lap to win the over-16 girls race. The Saltus student surged past the Berkeley pair of Azari Jones and Kelise Wade to win in a time of 14:16. Jones held off Wade to finish second in 15:00, while Wade stopped the clock at 15:33.
Warwick Academy won the division without having any runner finish in the top three. They won with 34 points, followed closely by Berkeley on 36 points and Saltus on 57.
Jackson Langley won the highly anticipated over-16 boys race finishing ahead of schoolmate Gianluca Bortoli. The Warwick pair were heavy favourites for the race and did not disappoint, cruising to a one-two finish.
Langley won in 15:21 with Bortoli finishing seven seconds behind in 15:28. Saltus Grammar’s Tobiah Goodchild finished a distant third in 17:17. Warwick won the division with 26 points, Saltus earned second place with 35 points and Berkeley finished third with 65 points.
