Saltus win Primary Schools Cross-Country Championships
Saltus Grammar School dominated the Primary School Cross-Country Championships on Thursday.
The young athletes in red were crowned overall champions with an impressive score of 160 points. Warwick Academy finished a distant second on 388 and Somersfield Academy third on 707.
The boys at Saltus had a commanding day, scoring a fantastic 54 points to beat Warwick on 183 and Somersfield on 323. Saltus’s girls were not to be outdone and scored 101 points on their way to victory, beating Bermuda High School into second and Warwick into third.
Vivienne Fox, from BHS, secured the first win of the day in the under-9 girls race, crossing the line in 9min 23sec. Saltus claimed the next two spots with Halo Lowe finishing second in 9:36 and Indigo Kemp third in 9:46. Esha Grainger gave Saltus three runners in the top ten after finishing sixth.
Saltus finished first in the division with 56 points, while Fox led BHS to second on 66 and Warwick finished third with 172 points. Among the notable individual performances were Cai’Z Dill-Seymour, from Somerset Primary, who finished fourth ahead of Koi Simmons from Mount Saint Agnes in fifth.
Five runners in the top seven propelled Saltus to a convincing win in the under-9 boys division.
Elliot Davidge was first home in 8:38 ahead of team-mate Jamie Kane, who claimed silver in 8:46. Carter Anderson finished fifth followed by Brooklyn Emery in sixth and Rory McLeod in seventh. Kanzo Thompson, from Dalton E Tucker Primary, ran superbly to win the bronze medal in 9:04.
Francis Patton student Koa Bean finished fourth and helped to propel his team to a third-place finish with 120 points. Warwick Academy finished second with 91 points and had Christopher Wheatley finish in the top ten. Harrington Sound’s Shannon Grimes-Jennings finished eighth and Addis Smith was ninth.
Diamond Morris and Naomi Nusum from Saltus both finished on the podium but Warwick Academy claimed the over-9 girls title with five runners in the top ten.
Morris stopped the clock at 10:43 with Nusum finishing third in 11:03. Freya Dunkle led the Warwick contingent with a second-place finish in 10:44. Kamari Brooks-Gibbons (fourth), Esme Jansma (eighth), Liliana Corbett (ninth) and Hazel Richards (tenth) all joined Dunkle in the top ten to give Warwick 33 points for the win.
Saltus finished second with 45 points, while Parker Howard (fifth) and Nola Thatcher (seventh) lifted BHS to a third-place finish with 59 points. Giselle Reid-Rubaine from Harrington Sound Primary finished sixth.
Three runners in the top ten helped Saltus to win the over-9 boys division. Nolan Horrobin produced an impressive run to beat runner-up Jacob Butterfield from Port Royal Primary. Heath Kemp, from Saltus, completed the podium with Butterfield’s Port Royal team-mate Roman Bather just missing out on a podium finish after finishing fourth.
A few schools recorded their first top-ten finishers with Emilio Roberts-Pitcher from St. George’s Preparatory (fifth) Tru Dillas from Northlands (sixth) and Karter Riley (eight) from West Pembroke all finishing in the top ten.
Warwick Academy’s Levi Mello finished seventh, while Trevor Mills from Somersfield Academy secured ninth place. Josh Cann joined Horrobin and Kempe in the top ten t give Saltus victory with 38 points. Warwick finished second with 92 and Somersfield Academy third with 106
