One of Bermuda’s budding triathletes, Jackson Langley, could follow the pathway of the island’s Olympians Flora Duffy and Erica Hawley, as he is planning to enrol at University of Colorado Boulder.

Langley, who is completing his high schooling at Warwick Academy, has been accepted by the institution. He used the school break last week to tour facilities, where Hawley and another Olympian, Tyler Butterfield, who resides in the area, were on hand to give him a tour.

“Super proud to be accepted to CU Boulder,” Langley posted on Instagram.

“Went to check it out and meet the triathlon team and it was even better than I imagined. Thanks to Tyler and Erica for showing me around, there will likely be more rides this fall.”

During his tour, Langley also met with the triathlon coaches and according to those close to the 17-year-old, he really loved the environment.

“While triathlon is not currently an NCAA championship sport for men in the United States, CU has a large and competitive collegiate squad and there’s an amazing community of endurance athletes in the area,” the source said.

“He got to visit and ride with Tyler Butterfield and Erica Hawley, who have been really encouraging about his potential move there. While he’s awaiting responses to a few other universities, it was such a great visit, he believes his decision is made.”

Butterfield, who represented Bermuda at the Olympics in 2004 and 2012, is in support of Langley enrolling at an institution renowned for its focus on aerospace, engineering and science.

“Boulder is one of the athletic powerhouses of the world for training and especially in the triathlon, cycling and running scene,” Butterfield said.

“The altitude is ideal, the level of competition there, world-class facilities and education CU gives is amazing. It is not by chance that so many world-class athletes are living in Boulder and many originally CU students.

“I think Jackson is going to thrive and continue his growth as an athlete and person. He has the potential and work ethic, it is exciting to see him continue his success and development.”
