Bermuda triathletes compete on three continents
Three Bermudian triathletes, Erica Hawley, Tyler Smith and Oliver Hayward, will be competing in three different continents this weekend.
Hawley takes part in the Americas Triathlon Cup Gulfport in Mississippi on Friday as one of 72 entries in the women’s elite race.
The Bermudian is rated the third-best female on the list behind American Gwen Jorgensen and Maria Carolina Velasquez Soto, from Colombia.
Hawley heads into the competition having started off her season with an eleventh-place finish at the Ironman 70.3 Dallas Little Elm in Texas, her second time doing a long-distance triathlon.
She is using the Americas Triathlon Cup Gulfport to prepare for the World Triathlon Championship Series Samarkand, in Uzbekistan, on April 25.
Smith will compete the Africa Triathlon Premium Cup Mossel Bay in South Africa on Saturday. The 27-year-old finished tenth at the Africa Triathlon Premium Cup Swakopmund in Namibia, where he felt that a rival fumbling with his wetsuit during a rough swim may have cost him a higher placing.
It was Smith’s second race after the Paris Olympics as the Bermudian tries to regain lost ground in the world rankings after struggling with injury.
Hayward is in Portugal for the Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Quarteira. The 17-year-old is one of the 65 junior elite men for the race.
Just like Smith, Hayward has been struggling with injuries, which have seen him not compete internationally since 2024. The youngster had a brilliant season that year, when he finished eight of 67 starters in the 16 to 19 male sprint, at the World Triathlon Age-Group Championships in Torremolinos, Spain.
Hayward capped off 2024 by winning the Cambridge Beaches Triathlon, where he got to compete against Hawley.
