Youngsters sail against overseas rivals

Some of the finest young sailors from around the world will set sail against the best of Bermuda in the Junior Gold Cup.

Each country taking part in this week's annual Gold Cup has sent representation to compete in its sister competition.

Racing runs from tomorrow until Saturday in the Great Sound and in Hamilton harbour on Sunday when the rookies, aged between 11 and 15, will mirror the Gold Cup course taken by the likes of Glenn Astwood and Blythe Walker.

The foreign sailors include Sweden's Oskar Lundquist and Jesper Gunneling, Finland's Mikka Nikkila, Denmark's Balder Tobiasen, Switzerland's Tim Wachter and Morgan Kiss, all 14. Jes Lyhne Bonde, 15, and 12-year-olds Andrew McKenzie from New Zealand and Goncalo Pinho make up the party.

Representing the Island from the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association are Sam Stan, Kyle Burgess, Blake Burgess, Chris Sposato, Owen Siese, Kalin Hillier, Brian Bulhoes, Kelsey Durham, Connor Astwood, MacKenzie Cooper, Renee Greenslade, Dimitri Stevens, Ryan Powell, Raheim Steede, Makai Joell, Joshua Hughes, Karl Kane-Collery, Antonio Bailey, Michael Barit. Blake Burgess, 14, recently came eighth in the Optimist European Championship.
