William Thompson and crew surged to the top of the leaderboard in the Etchells Class on day two of Bermuda International Invitational Race Week in the Great Sound yesterday.Thompson won both of yesterday’s two races which was enough to replace compatriot Tim Patton at the summit.The Etchells sailor is competing this week with long-time friends Somers Kempe and Adam Barboza and loving every moment of it.“We are really enjoying it,” Thompson said. “Adam and Somers are phenomenal sailors and things are working out very well for us.”The local sailor managed to remain steady in subtle yet shifty breezes that swung the compass point as much as 20-30 degrees.“It was fairly light and fluky and our strategy was to head for pressure and wherever the most wind was we went,” Thompson said.Patton had a day he’d rather quickly forget, making errors on the race course which cost him pole position.“We didn’t have the best of days, we zigged when we should have zagged a couple of times and out there if you shuffled your feet you lost your seat,” he said.Thompson now leads the Etchells fleet by two-points over nearest rival Patton after six-races and one drop.“It’s a very close battle and we are basically even,” Thompson said.Making a rare appearance in the Etchells yesterday was past Olympian Paula Lewin who deputised for third placed skipper John Hele.“John had a nice day on Sunday but unfortunately he had some work obligations and I was lucky enough to fill in,” said Lewin, who had an impressive second and third in yesterday’s two races. “I had a wonderful day and my crew were just fantastic.“I have been immersed in motherhood so to be able to get back to sail boat racing I realise how much I miss it.”Lewin will also be at the helm of Hele’s Etchell when racing resumes today.“I was asked to sail tomorrow (today) and I have re-arranged a few things to make that happen,” she said.Bermuda’s Malcolm Smith leads the Laser fleet by four -points over nearest rival Brett Wright after seven races and one drop.Defending Laser champion Rockal Evans lies in third, a further three -points adrift.There were protests still pending in the International One Design (IOD) fleet at press time last night.Provisional results show co-skippers John Burnham and Peter Rugg ahead over nearest rival Giles Peckham by eight-points after one drop with one race remaining in the ‘A’ Series.“We have been fortunate to get pretty good starts, which has helped us get clean air and get towards the front of the fleet,” said Rugg, who managed a first and a second at the helm in yesterday’s two races. “We have had some very good boats, they have been well prepared and they seem to sail very well.”Bermuda’s Penny Simmons slipped from third to fourth in the IOD fleet after finishing seventh and third yesterday.
