Marion race latest

Overall Marion Bermuda Race and Class A leader Shindig continues to make her way towards the Island on record pace.

At 7:10pm (local time) today skipper Michael Reney and crew aboard the Andrews 68 were located some 335.80 nautical miles from the St David's Head finish line, steaming along on a broad reach at 12 knots just west of the rhumb line.

Shindig has covered roughly 250 miles so far and remains on course to break the line honours record which currently stands at 68 hours, 58 minutes and 45 seconds and held by Simon de Pietro's Lilla which is not competing this year.

Trailing behind the leader's wake is the Swan 62, Lady B, and Morris 48, Kismet, in second and third overall respectively.

Lady B is travelling at 8.7 knots and was located 405.7 miles from the finish. Kismet is moving along at 7.7 knots and was last shown 422.6 miles from the finish line.

Further back in the 34-boat race fleet are local entries Spirit of Bermuda and the Hinckley Bermuda 40, Alice Kay.

The sloop Spirit of Bermuda is in ninth moving along at 6.4 knots some 435 miles away from the finish line with the crew keeping their fingers crossed for more breeze.

“We wish we had more wind, Spirit loves a stiff breeze to get her up and going,” said crewman Stewart Thomas. “But there is not a cloud in the sky and recent weather reports show nothing organising on the horizon.”

Spirit, the largest boat in the fleet, had the distinction of starting the 645 mile race first in Buzzards Bay, Marion, Massachusetts on Friday afternoon with skipper Preston Hutchings at the helm.

The 118-foot sloop is the sole entry in the new Classic Yacht Division.

Alice Kay is currently third in Class C and 25th overall and was last shown moving along at 7.1 knots some 462.1 miles from the finish line.

At the helm is skipper George Cubbon who is among those making their race debuts this year.
