Flawless Davis takes IOD title

Nearly perfect: Craig Davis and crew of Vrengen captured the International One Design national title at the weekend

Craig Davis and crew of Vengren put a huge feather in their cap at the weekend.

The experienced skipper and his colleagues captured glory in the International One Design Class at the National Championships after producing a near flawless display of sailing in the Great Sound on Saturday.

Davis and crew thrived in the 12-15 knot breezes, posting two bullets and a second in the three races sailed that left them two points clear of nearest rivals Solna, helmed by another seasoned skipper Patrick Cooper.

Incidentally, Davis was a member of Cooper’s team that placed third at last month’s Bermuda International Invitational Regatta also contested in the IOD in the Great Sound — venue for the 2017 America’s Cup.

Eugene ‘Penny’ Simmons and crew of Ariel was the only other team in the field. Simmons, an eight times IOD world champion and Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame inductee, finished two points behind Cooper.

Meanwhile, claiming this year’s national title in the International Etchells Class was frequent visitor John Hele, of Canada, and crew of Renegade.

Hele, a past Bermuda International Race Week winner, posted four bullets in the eight race series and finished three points ahead of second-placed Mark Watson, of the United States, and crew of Tiburon II.

Watson was at the helm on Saturday but did not race yesterday due to work commitments, leaving Dirk Kneulman, the two-times Etchells world champion, to steer the boat in his absence.

Rounding off the podium in the seven-boat fleet was Stevie Dickinson and crew that competed in Watson’s spare Etchells, Tiburon.

The Central American and Caribbean Games silver medallist pipped compatriot Tim Patton, a former national Etchells champion and Race Week winner, for the final spot on the podium.

Dickinson’s impressive showing at the weekend would have done his confidence the world of good ahead of the defence of his Long Distance Race title in the Comet dinghy later this month.
