Emily Nagel and Team AkzoNobel staged a comeback to secure a fifth podium display of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The Dutch syndicate completed the penultimate leg of the race around the world from Cardiff, Wales, to Gothenburg, Sweden, in third, covering the distance in four days, five hours, 32 mins, 53 sec.

“Made it to Sweden!” Nagel, the team’s sail trimmer, tweeted after completing another gruelling leg.

Team Brunel, also of the Netherlands, pipped Spanish rivals Mapfre by less than two minutes in a close battle for leg ten Line Honors.

Mapfre and Team Brunel are joint leaders in the overall standings with 65 points each, followed by China’s Dongfeng Race Team in third with 64 points — nine ahead of fourth placed Team AkzoNobel with one leg remaining.

Bermuda sailor Nagel and her team-mates were among the front-runners in the seven-boat fleet in the early stages of leg ten but slipped back to fifth after opting to round the Orkney Islands, the most northern waypoint in the race.

However, despite losing considerable ground on the leaders they refused to throw in the towel and mounted a comeback to claim a second straight podium display having finished leg nine from Newport, Rhode Island to Cardiff in second.

The Dutch team became the first team in Volvo Ocean Race history to break the 600-nautical mile barrier in a 24-hour period on leg nine, that feat arriving just hours after they set a new Volvo Ocean 65 class 24-hour distance run of 588.10nmi to eclipse the previous 65 record of 550.8nmi held by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing.

Nagel and her team-mates are back in action in tomorrow’s in port race in Gothenburg.

Team AkzoNobel are also fourth in the in port series standings.

The eleventh and final leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Gothenburg to The Hague, Netherlands, commences on Friday.
