Bermudians wait for action in Ilca World Championships

Local sailors Sebastian Kempe and Adriana Penruddocke will have to wait at least another day to start the ILCA World Championships in Qingdao, China.

The pair were keen to get their qualifying series under way in their respective fleets but were left to wait another day after light wind put paid to any action on the water.

Kempe and Penruddocke are now facing a long day when racing finally begins as organisers aim to complete the three races and make up for lost time.

A total of 237 of the world's best sailors from 40 nations are putting their skills to the test in challenging conditions at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre, which hosted the 2008 Olympic Games regatta and is known for its unpredictable breeze, currents and coastal fog.

Zac Littlewood, the Australian national champion and compatriot Zoe Thomson, are among the top contenders in the ILCA7 and ILCA 6 respectively.

The combined World Championships will unfold over three days of qualifying followed by three days of finals, with a 12-race series ultimately crowning the respective winners.

Bermuda’s Kempe and Penruddocke warmed up for this week’s event competing in last month’s French Olympic regatta.

Former Youth World Championships winner Kempe finished 15th in the 112-strong men’s ILCA 7 class and Olympian Penruddocke 26th among in a fleet of 72 in the women’s ILCA 6 class.

Kempe narrowly missed out on qualifying for the medal-race and is feeling inspired from what he regards as his “breakout” regatta having surpassed his expectations in chalking up a maiden win at this level.

Penruddocke, who represented Bermuda at last year’s Summer Olympics in Paris, had a best showing of fourth in the second race of the qualifying series and is also feeling inspired heading into this week’s ILCA 6 Women’s World Championships.
