Wait continues for Bermuda sailors at ILCA World Championships

Sailors wait for wind in Qingdao

Sebastian Kempe and Adriana Penruddocke were once again left to ponder what might have been after the start of the ILCA World Championships in Qingdao, China, was cancelled for the third straight day because of light wind.

After two days of no action brought on by the prevailing conditions, the pair launched their boats in morning fog hopeful of finally getting their qualifying series under way in their respective fleets, but must now wait at least another day after gentle 8-10kt wind forced the racing fleets back ashore.

Kempe, the former world youth champion, is competing in the ILCA 7 men’s class and Olympian Penruddocke in the ILCA 6 women’s class.

The women’s yellow fleet did attempt one start, which was abandoned in the last 20 seconds of the countdown as the wind dropped with the boats struggling to start.

The men’s fleet were met at their course area by a dying breeze, which soon fell below the required limits, and remained there for the rest of the day.

There are doubts that the minimum four races required to constitute a championship series will be possible, with the forecast of lighter winds over the remaining three days of scheduled racing.

Kempe and Penruddocke warmed up for this event at the French Olympic regatta last month, finishing fifteenth and 26th in their respective fleets in the single-handed Olympic dinghy, and were both feeling inspired heading to China.

Kempe chalked up a maiden win at this level and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the medal race, while Penruddocke, who represented Bermuda at the Paris Olympics last year, had a best showing of fourth in the qualifying series.
