Wait goes on for Bermuda sailors in China

Sebastian Kempe and Adriana Penruddocke were again denied the opportunity to showcase their talents after unfavourable conditions forced cancellation of racing for a fourth day at the ILCA World Championships in Qingdao, China.

A combination of light wind and fog prevented any attempts to finally start the qualifying series in the ILCA 7 men’s fleet in which Kempe is competing, but the former youth world champion remains upbeat despite the frustration.

“I am taking it day by day and focusing on keeping a positive mindset so when racing starts I am ready to go,” he told The Royal Gazette.

For the second straight day an attempt was made to get action under way in the ILCA 6 women’s yellow fleet, in which Penruddocke, who represented Bermuda at the Olympics in Paris last year, is again flying the island’s banner. However, proceedings were abruptly abandoned before the start as a result of fog.

The race committee will again attempt to start the regatta on Friday amid ongoing doubts that the minimum four races required to constitute a championship series will be possible. The forecast of lighter winds remains for the two days of scheduled racing.

Kempe and Penruddocke warmed up for this event at the French Olympic regatta last month, finishing fifteenth and 26th in their respective fleets in the single-handed Olympic dinghy.

A total of 237 of the world's best sailors from 40 nations are at the regatta being held at Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre, which hosted the 2008 Olympic Games regatta.
