Adriana Penruddocke is pleased with the way she coped with testing conditions at the ILCA World Championships in Qingdao, China.

The Bermuda Olympian finished 33rd among the 99-strong women’s ILCA 6 division and posted two top-ten finishes in her last two races in the Gold fleet to finish the regatta strongly.

“I’m happy with my performance coming away with a strong 33rd among 99 sailors with some great finishes in the lighter air and two top tens in the breeze,” Penruddocke told The Royal Gazette.

The start of the regatta was delayed for four days as light wind and fog took its toll on the racing fleet before finally commencing on the penultimate day of the world championships, which featured 237 of the world's best sailors from 40 nations.

“It was unfortunate the wind didn’t play for the beginning of the event, but that’s how it goes sometimes with a sport relying on nature,” said Penruddocke, who represented Bermuda at the Olympic Games in Paris last year.

“But it was a good experience in really working on the process and in the general boat park trying to stay chill in moments of waiting and then ready to switch on quickly when the time came. I found it really useful going into future events.

“We did manage to finish six qualifying races in stable conditions, both in some lighter airs and a breezy day on the final day.

“It’s been a busy spring and this closes out the block before going back into training for the next World Series event in July.”

Louise Cervera, of France, topped the women’s ILCA 6 leaderboard, with two-times European champion Agata Barwinska, of Poland, earning the silver medal and Ireland’s Eve McMahon bronze to round off the podium finishers.

Also flying Bermuda’s flag at the regatta was former youth world champion Sebastian Kempe, who finished 85th among the 138 sailors in the men’s ILCA 7 division.

Willem Wiersema, of the Netherlands, secured the gold medal, Pavlos Kontides, of Cyprus, silver and Australian Zac Littlewood bronze.

The championships was held at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre from May 10 to 17.
