Team Bermuda end with two wins at world championship
Bermuda ended their campaign at the Team Racing World Championship on a good note after chalking up their first two victories on the final day of the regatta in Newport, Rhode Island.
The island’s two-pronged team was victorious in their round-robin matches against Greek rivals and Team Argentina in the two versus two team racing event contested in the one design Sonar keelboat held on Narragansett Bay.
Helmsman Benn Smith was happy to finally get some wins under his belt and is looking forward to getting more exposure in team racing events in the future.
“I am really happy with how we ended the event and I think we are all very happy with that,” Smith told The Royal Gazette.
“We beat the Greeks and Argentinians and had a really good race against the Bahamas which we ended up losing, but it was very close.
“I think it really came together as a team. We had very limited training in the lead-up and the learning curve was super steep, but by the end of it we were really putting together good results.
“Overall, I was very happy with how it went and I think we are all hoping to do more team racing in the future.”
Jason Saints, Julia Lines and Meghan Sherwin were the remaining members on Smith’s team while Sophia Dias helmed the island’s second team alongside Alan Frith, Katrina Williams and Trystan Hocking.
Dias, the only female helm at the event, feels the island has a promising future in international team racing events.
“I feel confident for Bermuda competing at this level going forward as we were extremely competitive against the best team racers in the world,” she said.
“The Bermuda team has worked very hard for this in the small period of time we had to prepare.
“Looking back on this event I am extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to sail against these talented sailors in such challenging conditions. I think being one the youngest, and the only female skipper, provided me and enormous opportunity for growth.
“I wish to recognise the support from the Bermuda Sailing Association and a special thanks to Tom Clarke and Leatrice Roman for giving myself and the team their time and experience.”
Corinthian Yacht Club were crowned 2025 Team Racing World champions with Kiwi Racing securing the silver medal and Baltimore Sailing Club the bronze to round off the podium finishers.
