Dylan Menzies impresses at ILCA US Championships
Dylan Menzies offered another glimpse of his potential with an impressive showing at the ILCA US Championships in Long Island, New York.
The promising sailor finished nineteenth among a formidable fleet of 64 sailors that competed in the ILCA 6 single-handed dinghy.
He won the opening qualifying race to get his campaign off to a flying start which was followed up by equally impressive finishes of tenth and fourth.
Menzies advanced to the gold fleet despite having been disqualified in the fourth race for going over the starting line too early, but was unable to make further inroads as light breeze brought an early end to the regatta, which was hosted by Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club and contested on Oyster Bay.
“Sailing conditions on Friday were ideal and I’m really happy with my racing,” Menzies told The Royal Gazette.
“I was hoping the wind would return for the final days so the gold fleet could race. That would have given me a chance to drop the UFD [disqualification] from my fourth race and get more big fleet racing and start experience.”
It is the second time the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club sailor has qualified for the gold fleet at an international regatta this year having also achieved the feat at the Orange Bowl Youth Regatta in Florida in January, where he finished 39th in a fleet of 97 in the ILCA 6 class.
Menzies is now looking ahead to a busy schedule this summer as he is also due to compete in the Youth World Championship in Los Angeles and ILCA UK Open & National Championships.
Jackson Bjorklund won the recent ILCA US Championships, winning all of the qualifying races on the way to the title, with fellow Americans Sebastian Sheppard and Timothy Liu finishing second and third.
