Sebastian Kempe’s challenge for gold thwarted by weather
Sebastian Kempe’s hope of making a gold-medal challenge at the Junior Pan American Games has been thwarted by the weather.
No sailing was possible in Encarnacion on Saturday, with sailors in both Ilca 6 and Ilca 7 fleets kept on shore as a result of insufficient wind to hold either of the two scheduled races.
Going into the second day of competition, Kempe was occupying the silver-medal position after finishes of fifth and second in the opening two races on Friday.
Kempe was four points behind Charles Barclay, from the United States, after day one and expressed his frustration at not being able to race on day two.
“A frustrating day waiting for suitable racing conditions,” he said.
“Unfortunately sometimes it is part of our sport and it’s nothing we are not used to. We are hoping the championship gets more racing tomorrow.”
Bermudian Nicole Stovell, who sits ninth overall, in the Ilca 6 fleet, also spent her day on the sidelines. The medal positions for both fleets will be decided on the final day of the regatta on Sunday.
