BFA forced to pull out of Olympic qualifiers
Bermuda have withdrawn their Under-23 men’s team from this summer’s 2012 Olympic qualifiers because of a lack of funds. The Under-23s were due to play in Caribbean regional qualifiers in July midway through the Bermuda Hogges’ season but the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have performed a u-turn and pulled them out of the competition. In the recent Government Budget, the BFA’s annual grant was slashed by $250,000 although they will dip into their pockets to pay for two women’s teams to compete internationally this summer. The senior women’s side will head to the Dominican Republic for Olympic qualifiers against the hosts, Trinidad and Dominica in July. A month later, the Under-17 team are involved in World Cup qualifiers against Antigua and Barbuda and Bahamas. The venue for those matches is yet to be determined. It’s understood the BFA will use money allocated from FIFA’s Women’s Development Fund to help cover the costs of those trips.Following an in-depth analysis into the failings of the female game, the BFA completely revamped the domestic league last season as part of a one-year pilot scheme and are keen to revitalise the women’s national team programme.BFA youth director Devarr Boyles said there simply wasn’t enough cash in the kitty to pay for three national teams to play in tournaments in such close succession but couldn’t hide his disappointment that the men’s team had been bypassed.“We were looking to have an Olympic men’s team but based on the level of funding we have in place right now, we were unable to do all three groups,” said Boyles. “They (the executive) made a decision to bypass the men’s team. It’s purely based on funding, that was the only consideration, but we have to move on now.“There was a big effort to make it happen but the realisation is that it just couldn’t be done,” he said. “If more funding came available I know the executive would put it back on immediately.”UK based professionals Reggie Lambe (Ipswich Town) and Nahki Wells (Carlisle United) would have been eligible for the Olympic qualifiers, and Boyles admits it would have been “fantastic” to see them play alongside the top local players.“We have some exciting local players in the (Olympic) age pool like Jahron Dickinson (St. George’s) and Tumani Steede (Devonshire Cougars) who I would have loved to have worked with,” Boyles said. “It would have been fantastic to see them line up alongside the likes of Reggie and Nahki.”The next opportunity for those players to represent their country will be the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, earmarked for December. It’s been more than two-and-a-half years since the senior men’s team played an international match. That game, against the Cayman Islands, ended in a 0-0 draw.
