Goater hails City demolition

Shaun Goater was nearly at a lost for words after watching his former club Manchester City ruthlessly thump city rivals Manchester United 6-1 yesterday.Going into the famous derby, Goater said he was confident City would come away with maximum points. But not even he could’ve foreseen the carnage that unfolded as the ‘noisy neighbours’ inflicted the heaviest defeat on United at Old Trafford in 56 years.“This certainly wasn’t something I saw coming,” said Goater, who netted twice for City against United in his hey-day.“I actually thought that City could win the game and thought a 3-1 scoreline was the sort of result we could produce. But to produce a 6-1 result was unbelievable.“I think that without a doubt Mancini (City manager Roberto Mancini) would be ecstatic regarding the result and how the team played, and I saw the expression on his face when they scored the sixth goal. We could’ve actually won this game by a seven or eight goal margin. Alex Ferguson now knows that the ‘noisy neighbours’ are making noise.”City prevailed on goals from the controversial Mario Balotelli and sub Edin Dzeko who each netted braces while Sergio Aguero and David Silva also got their names on a scoresheet that sent shock waves reverberating around the world.Darren Fletcher netted a consolation goal for United who were reduced to ten-men after Johnny Evans was sent off in the 47th minute for a late challenge on Balotelli.“Some may say that United had a player sent off, but you can only beat what is in front of you, and City surely done that,” Goater said. “That was just a professional knowing that there’s an opportunity to exploit some mistakes or weaknesses in United when they had 10 men.”Goater was impressed with the businesslike manner in which City went about their task, reserving special mention for Spanish playmaker Silva who also had a hand in three of his team’s goals.“Silva makes it seem all too easy and he must be a great player to play with because he’s never really given you a difficult ball,” he said. “He always delivers really good balls just how you need them and how you want them. He’s very hard to mark and allows the transition of play to be very easy for the team, he played exceptionally well.”Goater also spoke highly of Italian striker Balotelli who escaped unhurt in a blaze ignited by fireworks at his Cheshire residence in the lead-up to yesterday’s derby.“There was all this talk about him having fireworks in his house some of hour in the morning . . . but he seems to be a character who rises to the big derby against United,” he said. “The fans have taken to him and he wants to deliver what they expect.”
