BFA to meet discuss gang violence

Bermuda Football Association executives are believed have met yesterday to discuss the shock decision by Boulevard to pull out of last night’s Friendship Trophy match against Somerset Trojans in Somerset over fears of gang violence.A statement is expected from the BFA today although the competition will continue without the Premier Division club. However, a Premier match between the two teams is scheduled for the first week in February and it remains to be seen whether that will be played.Last night’s game was supposed to have kicked off at 9pm while the leage encounter is sheduled for 8pm on Saturday.Somerset Cricket Club president Alfred Maybury said yesterday he was is hopeful that the league game will be played.Cancellation of Wednesday’s game was announced on Tuesday night in a statement provided by Boulevard president Dr Lou Matthews, who said the BFA had already been informed of their decision.Maybury said he understood the club’s stance, although he hadn’t been in contact with Matthews or his executives.“They haven’t had any discussion with me about their concerns,” said Maybury.“In the end, they have to protect their players and most clubs would do the same.“That was their decision and I don’t know the make-up of their players. That was purely their decision to make, so it’s not much I can say about their issues.”Calling off the game came after a weekend when shots were fired in Somerset and in Pembroke. With the February 4 game again scheduled in the evening, there be may cause for concern given the current circumstances. The West Enders travelled to BAA Field earlier in the season and beat Boulevard 3-2 in a match that went off without incident. And given Blazers’ plight in the league, sitting at the bottom of the table on four points and six points away from safety, February’s game could be a must-win clash.Security has been increased in previous games where visiting clubs raised their concerns with the Somerset club about violence and player safety.Maybury, however, pulled no punches in his assessment of the return fixture between the two clubs, stating that his club can’t move the location and that he isn’t willing to move to another ground.“They have to play us in Somerset in the second half of the season so I don’t know what will happen there. I’m in the same position as everyone else because our club location won’t change.“That will be a decision that they (Boulevard) will have to make because for the league it is a Somerset home game and Somerset’s field is 6 Cricket Lane, so that’s not going to change.“Whenever we have had teams expressing these concerns, we have beefed up security as a precaution and put the necessary things in place, so I really don’t know the basis of their decision.”The withdrawal of Boulevard gave Trojans automatic passage through to the next round where they will play Dandy Town at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday. In his statement on Tuesday night, Dr. Matthews said: “The Boulevard Community Club is committed to impacting the lives of young men and women through football. We do this by emphasising for our players: leadership, positive living and safety.“In light of the current issues that continue to disrupt our neighbourhoods, we decided it was in the best interest of our players not to play the Friendship game scheduled for Wednesday night. This was communicated to the BFA in writing.”“We remain committed to our work in Central Pembroke as we have for the past 37 years. We thank the BFA for it hard work in preparation for the tournament. We wish the Trojans the best.”
