Burgess quits BFA committee
Shannon Burgess has stepped down as chairman of Bermuda Football Association’s competitions committee because of overseas work commitments. The former Bermuda captain has been seconded by HSBC to London where he will start his temporary position later this month.Burgess expects to remain in the UK for up to three years but hasn’t ruled out working for the BFA again when he returns to the Island.“The BFA executive currently serving has a good dynamic about it and I was looking forward to continuing working with the team,” said the ex-Devonshire Colts defender.“But this opportunity makes quite difficult to stay on (as chairman of the competitions committee). It’s just another chapter in life, I guess. Perhaps when I return I’ll take another stab at it.”Burgess, who has served on the BFA executive since 2010, believed he had brought a “player’s perspective” to scheduling domestic competitions. He admitted his committee had faced, and overcome, several challenges during his stint at the BFA and believed Bermuda football was on the right path.“I’ve played in the local leagues for many years and I guess that experience brings a player’s perspective to the scheduling of the domestic competitions,” he said.“Obviously it’s had its challenges particularly this year with the World Cup qualifiers and the upcoming Carifta Games.“But the committee I’ve worked with has been a valuable asset to me as the chairman and I think Bermuda football is heading on the right path.“There will continue to be challenges but the brains that are on the table should be able to come up with the right ideas as we go forward.”
