Leaders Hornets edge past St George’s

Dandy Town 3St George’s 2Raymond Beach scored a brace as Dandy Town came from behind to beat St George’s at St John’s Field yesterday to remain in the hunt for the Premier Division title.Showing their title credentials, the hosts also got a goal from Angelo Simmons, while Jahron Dickinson and Gregory Wade struck for Colts.Dickinson got the visitors on the scoresheet first, beating Treadwell Gibbons in goal for Town in the 24th minute. The lead would last all of 15 minutes before Simmons found the back of the net to level matters at the break. The stage was set for Beach, who gave his side a two-goal lead with strikes in the 52nd and 82nd to give Town a little bit of breathing space.Wade scored a bizarre goal, with his cross getting caught up in the wind and curling into the far corner. In the end, however, it was too little too late as Town held onto their position at the top of the table.“We found it slow at the beginning but credit to them for coming out and trying to take the game to us, but the conditions made it hard for both sides and I’m happy to get the win,” said winger Damon Ming..“It seemed as if every call was against us, the refereeing was tough on us, but at the end of the day we got the three points and that is all that matters.“We went down but we have the never say die attitude and today we showed that we are in the race for a reason and we are getting the results.“Championship teams show character in games like this and that’s what we did.”PHC 1 St David’s 1Lowly St David’s salvaged a vital point from a game they were expected to lose by a large margin against Premier Division challengers PHC at Southampton Oval yesterday. They matched their opponents for much of the contest which saw PHC take a deserved 1-0 lead after 34 minutes through Shaki Smith after 12 minutes when he tapped home a cross from Cecoy Robinson.Though St David’s battled for supremacy most of the remaining half favoured PHC but even the league’s top scorer, Antwan Russell, found the going tough against a defence marshalled by St. David’s centre-back Tre Govia in front of their competent goalkeeper Corey Richardson.Russell watched in agony as his blast from 12 yards was sensationally blocked by the advancing Richardson after 31 minutes to deny a second goal by PHC and then again the prominent forward hammered an angled shot off the post from 15 yards after 43 minutes.St. David’s had a few chances as well with their best coming from hard-working left-winger Anthony Burchall after 18 minutes who steered an angled shot into the chest of Troy Hall Jr. in the PHC goal.St. David’s drew level after 37 minutes when goalkeeper Hall fouled Burchall as the St. David’s player attempted to steal the ball from him, referee Elijhu Homes awarding a penalty which Fiqre Crockwell netted with a fine strike.Shaki Smith and Jevone Sealey came close to re-establishing the lead for PHC early in the second half with good shots, but Richardson in the St. David’s goal remained sharp by pushing their efforts outside. With St. David’s defence remaining unscathed as PHC piled on the pressure Cecoy Robinson and Russell fired fierce shots which goalkeeper Richardson pushed over. The big blunder by PHC, who were guilty of several misdirected passes in the second half as they advanced deep in St. David’s half at will, came right at the end in injury time when Shaki Smith astonishingly miskicked from just three yards with the goal at his mercy and thus denying his team the victory.North Village 5 Boulevard 0North Village continued their flying start to the new year with a crushing victory over hapless Boulevard at Bernard Park yesterday.Boulevard, still smarting from last weekend’s 7-0 defeat against Dandy Town, were found painfully wanting against a resurgent Village who were three goals up by the interval.Veteran defender Kofi Dill gave Rams the lead with a stooping header before Ralph Bean helped himself to a brace before half-time.After the break Village continued to press the pedal and increased their advantage through young striker Jason Lee.Vernon Tankard then completed the rout, scoring the best goal of the game with left footed strikes from distance.Village remain five points behind league leaders Dandy Town.
