Hogges start campaign on home turf
Bermuda Hogges kick-off the upcoming Premier Development League (PDL) season with a trio of home games at BAA Field.
Up first will be a match against New Jersey Rangers on Friday, May 18, followed by a visit from Brooklyn Knights two days later before facing Jersey Express on May 26.
Hogges, who secured a mid-table position with their best ever points tally last season, then embark on a road trip on June 2 when they will play four matches in seven days, against Westchester Flames, Brooklyn Knights, Long Island Rough Riders and Jersey Express.
They will finish the season with three games on home soil against Long Island Rough Riders, new franchise Baltimore Bohemians and Westchester Flames.
Hogges upcoming PDL campaign is not expected to clash with this summer’s Digicel Caribbean Cup.
Due to changes made to the US Open Cup format a knockout tournament including teams from Major League Soccer and United Soccer Leagues (USL) the PDL will start on April 30, a few weeks earlier than previous campaigns.
Therefore, it’s likely there will be no overlap between the PDL season and the Digicel Cup where the Bermuda national team, featuring a large portion of Hogges players, will be pushing to qualify for the Gold Cup.
Although the BFA have had full control over team affairs for the past two seasons, their level of financial support has significantly reduced since their annual grant was slashed by Government in the last Budget by $250,000.
While the BFA’s funding commitment will remain limited this summer, both Wade, the BFA player development committee, and Boyles, the director of football, consider Hogges an integral part of the national programme.
