Cougars edge past battling St David’s

St David’s 1 Devonshire Cougars 2Devonshire Cougars withstood a late St David’s revival to come away with maximum points from a match they should have had sewn up by the half.

Kwame Steede put the Big Cats’ noses out front when he beat Warriors’ keeper Corey Richardson with a neat flick at the near post.

Korvon Tucker then extended Cougars’ lead with a clinical finish in the box.

Jamal Woodly dragged Warriors back in the match when he scored just minutes after replacing the ineffective Anthony Burchall.

Tareek Webb-Caisey, Woodly and Zachery Morris then came to within inches of grabbing the equalizer for Warriors before the home team ran out of time.

While Cougars are already assured of top-flight football next season the same cannot be said for St David’s who remain anchored in the relegation zone with two matches remaining in the 2011-12 campaign.

Warriors are currently three points adrift of safety and will have to do much better in their final league matches against Boulevard and St George’s if they are to survive the drop.

And they will have to do so without influential skipper Fiqre Crockwell who departs for Dubai with the senior national cricket squad on Friday.

Cougars were by far the better team in the first half and with better finishing in the last third they should have killed the game off before the break.

St David’s afforded the trio of Tucker, Steede and Domico Coddington plenty of space to work their magic and they eventually paid the price for doing so when Steede cracked the ice from a set piece.

The Bermuda international flicked Jesse Seymour’s free kick past Richardson at the near post as the Warriors defence stood frozen.

Cougars then threatened to cut loose as Steede shot over from close range before Coddington headed over and then forced Richardson to make a fingertip save.

Warriors’ best scoring chances in the first half fell to Detroy Smith and Burchall who shot over from inside the 18-yard box.

These missed opportunities ultimately came back to haunt as Tucker doubled Cougars’ lead when he tapped in Steede’s precision cross to finish off a classic counter attack that left Warriors completely exposed at the rear.

With Tucker, Coddington and Steede in menacing form up front, and Chris Caisey pulling the strings in midfield, it always seemed a matter of time before Warriors completely folded.

But against the run of play Woodly poked Otis Minors free kick in the roof of the net and just like that Warriors were back in the match.

The goal seemed to knock Cougars off stride and in the end they were lucky to come away with maximum points after absorbing some late pressure.

Warriors threatened to break through again when Kijuan Franks was dispossessed in the box. But the Cougars defender was spared the blushes as team mate Zeko White made two clutch blocks on the goal line to deny Caisey and Woodly from point blank range.

Cougars also dodged a bullet just moments from the final whistle after Morris waltzed his way in the box but watched in agony as his shot sailed inches past the post after taking a slight deflection.
