Hogges welcome back hot shot Bean

Keishen Bean will return to action for Bermuda Hogges this weekend.

Bean, who struck eight goals from midfield last term, missed the opening two home games due to school commitments but should feature against Westchester Flames tomorrow. The North Village man believes his overall game has improved since last summer and is confident Hogges can convert their encouraging early displays into three-point hauls“I feel I have much more to offer this time around, I’m more mature as a player,” said the Cape Breton University student. “I’m more prepared this season than ever before as I’ve been training hard in Canada.“I’m very excited that Hogges kept Maurice Lowe as the head coach; he has so much to offer us. He has a different approach and knows how to turn good performances into actual results.”Lowe has backed the versatile Bean to continue where he left off last season, which saw him named in the PDL Eastern Conference All-Star team on the strength of his free-scoring performances.“Keishen’s performances last season spoke for themselves; he was one of the best players in the league and he’ll be a big boost for us,” said Lowe, whose side drew their opening games of the season against New Jersey Rangers and Brooklyn Knights. Also joining up with the Hogges 20-man travelling squad will be Boston-based Bermuda skipper Khano Smith, who will add a sprinkling of experience to the young squad.“Khano will be joining us for this portion of games,” said Lowe, “Khano brings everything on and off the field. He has a professional attitude and the players, particularly the younger ones, can really learn from him.”An inability to consistently pick up points on their travels has plagued Hogges over the years although they finally showed signs of getting to grips with life on the road last summer, winning a handful of matches. While Lowe insists they will be striving to secure maximum points from all five games, he admits he will have to be strategic in his team selections to keep his players fresh throughout the 12-day trip.Hogges had been due to play four away games in ten days but last week’s postponed home match against New Jersey Express has been tagged to the end of their challenging schedule.“Five games in 12 days is gruelling for anyone but that’s the challenge we face by playing in this league and it’s a challenge we’re up to,” he said.“We have a sports science department in the National Academy now and we rely heavily on them in terms of recovery, rest, hydration and nutrition.“We want to win all of the matches but we must be strategic and we’ve had discussions about our targets for the trip. The key is to hit those targets because anyone can set targets and say they’re looking to do well.”Hogges away trip scheduleJune 2 v Westchester FlamesJune 5 Brooklyn KnightsJune 7 Long Island Rough RidersJune 9 New Jersey ExpressJune 11 New Jersey Express (rearranged fixture)..
