Kyle still keen to coach in UK

New Robin Hood coach Kyle Lightbourne

Kyle Lightbourne hasn’t given up on his ambitions to coach in the UK despite turning his immediate attentions to establishing Robin Hood as a Premier Division force. The 43-year-old succeeds Andrew Bascome, who stepped down as Hood coach after guiding them to a seventh-place finish in their inaugural season in the top flight.Lightbourne said he was confident of building on the solid foundations laid by his predecessor and, with the addition of a few new faces, believes they will be capable of winning honours.“It’s a good opportunity for me to get back into coaching. I’ve being away for a season and I’ll look to take Robin Hood on from where Andrew left them,” he said.“Andrew did a fantastic job in getting them up. They did quite well last season although they fell away towards the end a little bit. However, they were never in any relegation trouble.“I’ll just be trying to build on what Andrew did. You always hope you will be able to pick up a few new players as well who can help you out.”The ex-national team coach has been out of the domestic game since quitting PHC during the 2010-2011 season, but believed Hood were a good fit for him and had been impressed with the running of the club and the attitude of their players.“The Hood players seem to have a good work ethic and the club seems to be going from strength to strength,” he said. “They’ve been around for quite some time but have only been in the football league proper for three seasons.“I know they have plans to have a ladies team and I know they are looking to become a consistent Premier Division club.”Lightbourne still harbours hopes of furthering his coaching career in the UK with a possible move to his former club Walsall believed to be on the cards in the future. He had hoped to take up a position at Walsall this summer and only agreed to take the Hood job after a move fell through due to the English League One side’s financial constraints.“I’ve always wanted to go to England and coach and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the future,” said Lightbourne, who briefly returned to his old stomping ground to help coach Walsall’s strikers last season.Lightbourne is currently assisting Gary Darrell in preparing the national Under-20 team for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers in Puerto Rico, although he said he had no plans to permanently join Bermuda Football Association’s National Academy.“I’m just helping out Gary Darrell with the Under-20s and that’s basically all there is to it,” said Lightbourne, who has been linked with the vacant national team post along with Bascome and Shaun Goater.
