Wolves eye Cougars scalp

Wolves midfielder Jared Peniston

Wolves will be hunting for their second prized scalp in less than a week when they face Devonshire Cougars in the Digicel Premier Division tonight at Devonshire Rec.Don Vickers’ side pulled off one of the surprise results of the opening weekend of the league season, defeating perennial powerhouse North Village 3-2 at Bernard Park on Sunday. In Cougars, though, Wolves will be up against a side still licking their wounds having crashed out of the Dudley Eve in a 2-1 defeat to Dandy Town in midweek. Both teams have made winning starts to the league season, though, with Cougars beating PHC 2-1 last Friday although the pressure will be on Dennis Brown’s stuttering Big Cats to avoid a second successive defeat.Cougars finished Brown’s debut season trophyless, the first time they have done so in recent memory, and such a failure is unlikely to tolerated by the team’s loyal and vocal supporters who will expect a sustained title challenge this campaign.Conversely, Wolves’ remit this season is quite simple: remain in the top-flight, and they could make that target slightly easier by picking up another three points against their landlords Cougars.Wolves midfielder Jared Peniston admits confidence is high in the dressing room after the team’s win over Village“The team feels good about the win over village and has given us confidence that we can compete in the Premier League,” he said.“Wolves will take one game at a time and we just want to get a good results to survive.”Peniston believes the club are benefiting from John Barry Nusum’s decision to relinquish his coaching duties to concentrate on playing.Nusum, the Bermuda national team skipper, led Wolves to the First Division championship last term.“It is a great bonus that John Barry is concentrating on playing but everyone has their part to play for Wolves,” he added. In tonight’s earlier game at Devonshire Rec., Paget take on St David’s at 7pm in the First Division.Wolves against Cougars kicks off at 9pm.
