Jonte a last-minute sub for Crawley

Bermuda’s Jonte Smith got a second taste of first team football with English League One side Crawley Town yesterday albeit for only a single minute.

Sub Smith was brought on by manager Richie Barker in added time with Crawley already 3-0 up over struggling Colchester United.

The son of former national cricket team captain, Clay Smith, made his debut on Saturday when he was also used as a sub in a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

He entered the fray in the 79th minute in that match.

Yesterday’s win was Crawley’s first home league victory in nine weeks and moved them to eighth position in the standings..

Mark Connolly gave the Red Devils the perfect start with a goal after five minutes while Billy Clarke added two more in the second half.

It was Colchester’s seventh successive league defeat.

Smith’s progression follows an impressive loan spell with Ryman League team Metropolitan Police where he netted 24 goals in 19 appearances.

He was recalled by Crawley last month after the club opted not to extend his loan.

Bermuda pro Nahki Wells was on the bench in Bradford City’s 0-0 draw away to Morecambe yesterday but wasn’t expected to play a part in the match having suffered a stomach virus last week which kept him out of Saturday’s 4-2 defeat by Rochdale.
