Wolves facing make or break showdown

Wolves captain Jared Peniston.

Wolves captain Jared Peniston admits his side face a ‘make or break’ derby clash against league leaders Devonshire Cougars tomorrow night at Devonshire Rec.After a promising start to the season, having led the Digicel Premier Division after the first month of the season, Wolves are only five points above the relegation zone. They currently sit on 11 points with only St George’s and Robin Hood behind them on six points.Successive losses to Southampton Rangers, PHC, and Robin Hood saw the side fall into the bottom four and worryingly into a relegation battle.Tomorrow they take on the league leaders and the most consistent top-flight side on home turf, and Peniston hopes Wolves can claim at least a point from the game.“It’s important just to get a good result on Friday against the most consistent team in the league, so we need to show up and play.“It would be great to win the derby but a good result is a must.“Looking at what is ahead of us, if we can get something out of this match it will certainly put us in good stead in the coming weeks.”Upcoming fixtures for the club are away trips to Flanagan’s Onions and St George’s, with a home game against Somerset Trojans sandwiched in between.Seeing how things have gone since their encouraging start to the campaign, Peniston is looking to turn the negative into a positive as the business end of the season approaches.“Sometimes that’s how football goes, one minute you are in form and out the next. We just need pick our heads up show Bermuda we are here to stay in the top flight.“Nothing in life is easy and our main goal for the year was to stay up and that is still our main focus.”The first match between tenants Wolves and landlords Cougars ended in a 3-3 draw, and Peniston hopes there aren’t as many fireworks in tomorrow’s game.“The last game ended in a high scoring draw, but I expect our landlords to come with the intensity they have shown this season but we will see on Friday night how both teams play.“It’s a derby, both teams will want to win it not only for their fans, but also given the positions in the table both sides are in.”Kick off is set for 8pm.
