St. George’s hold Cougars to leave title race wide open
Devonshire Cougars 1St George’s 1Digicel Premier Division leaders Devonshire Cougars grabbed a valuable point against St George’s on their quest to the league title at home at Devonshire Rec last night.Korvon Tucker scored in the 19th minute for the host, while Jarreau Hayward struck in the 57th to level matters.Knowing the stakes in the match, the hosts weren’t able to capitalise in their onus to grab the win, with the conditions less than ideal and stray passes hindering their progress towards their ambition of getting the required result.Tucker’s strike set the host on their way, only to be pegged back by Hayward’s second half tally.“The result isn’t what we wanted at home but the point will take us a long way in the bigger scheme of things,” said Cougars skipper Chris Caisey JrLast night’s result means Cougars hold a seven-point lead over North Village, who play Somerset Trojans at Bernard Park in a must-win match tomorrow. Cougars and Village meet next weekend at Bernard Park in a match that will either see Cougars winning the league or the title race going right down to the last league games of the season on March 24.Elsewhere in the top flight this weekend, Robin Hood host Dandy Town tonight at Goose Gosling Field tonight with kickoff scheduled for 9pm. Tomorrow’s fixtures see Wolves travel to Southampton Oval to tackle PHC, while Southampton Rangers make the short trip to the capital to play Flanagan’s Onions who will relegate St. George’s, and possibly Robin Hood also, if they win.All matches are set for 3pm kickoff unless otherwise stated.In First Division action, Ireland Rangers host Paget at Malabar, while BAA make a trip to Lord’s to face league leaders St David’s.Boulevard will play X’Roads at Police Field, Hamilton Parish will lock horns with Prospect at Wellington Oval, and Somerset Eagles travel to Bernard Park to face off against Young Men’s Social Club.
