Tucker magic does the trick

St George’s Colts climbed out of the relegation zone after their dogfight against Southampton Rangers was settled by an Anthony Rocker own goal at Wellington Oval yesterday.

While the goal was as scrappy as the match itself, the moment of skill that created it was worthy of winning any game, with Mitchell Tucker, the substitute, earning the plaudits for a fine piece of dribbling.

Tucker had been on the field just two minutes when he sold an outrageous dummy to leave Maquel Tankard, the left back, in a spin before cutting inside from the right to create panic in the Rangers defence.

His low cross caused further mayhem and Rocker, desperately scrambling for the ball under pressure from Tre Govia, the St George’s midfielder, was only able to knock it against Corey Richardson, the Rangers goalkeeper, and into the net.

That act of trickery from Tucker was the only moment of genuine quality in a game between the two sides propping up the table at the start of play.

Flanagan’s Onions’ 5-1 thrashing by Hamilton Parish means St George’s scrape out of the bottom two on goal difference. Rangers take their place at the bottom, two points short of safety.

“Mitchell Tucker does that a lot in training but he’s not been playing as much as he would like,” Kameron Fox, the St George’s coach, said.

“He’s been working hard so I was pleased he was able to get his chance, and it was a good piece of skill.”
