Hornets have a point to prove
The FA Cup has been won by only two teams — Dandy Town and Devonshire Cougars — in the last five years, with Town installed as the favourites to land another title.
Cougars, who won in 2010, ‘11 and ‘13, were eliminated by Flanagan’s Onions in the first round, leaving defending champions Town as the team to beat following wins in 12012 and last season when they won their fourth FA Cup title.
This weekend’s quarter-finals promise to produce some interesting matches as four other winners of the cup, including First Division leaders Boulevard, are through to the last eight. Boulevard, eight-time winners, travel to Somerset to meet the Trojans who share nine titles with North Village while PHC lead with ten wins, though only one since 1992. They beat Dandy Town 2-0 in the 2008 final.
Ian Coke will be the key man in the Boulevard attack, along with Tiaevince Douglas who are the top scorers in the First Division. Coke has 18 goals, including five in the last week, while Douglas has found the net 14 times in the division’s most lethal partnership. It will be interesting to see how they match up against a Somerset defence that has conceded just a goal a game in the league.
PHC thrashed St David’s 6-1 in their replay eight days ago and now they face an unpredictable Onions side whose league form has dipped lately, sending them into the bottom three in the Premier Division standings. Their upset over Devonshire Cougars showed what they are capable of, but PHC’s record in the competition against a team never to have reached the final should give them the edge.
Robin Hood are another team new to cup titles and Town will have something to prove when they meet at Goose Gosling Field tonight. So will North Village when Southampton Rangers visit Bernard Park, as it was against Rangers that Village suffered their first loss in the league back in October when Rangers came away with a shock 2-0 win, their first after three straight losses.
Player-coach Ralph Bean Jr has donned his boots again and is lending his experience to the Village youngsters. Village’s best period in the competition was between 2000 and 2006 when they won the FA Cup five times.
Rangers have just a single FA Cup triumph, back in 1983-84 when they beat Devonshire Colts in a replay. After that they lost in the 1996 final to Boulevard and 2011 to Cougars. They also went down to BAA 3-2 in the first final back in 1955-56, before losing again in the final to Somerset in 1969 and ‘77.
