Free-scoring Village focused on double delight

Village are hoping to add the Corona Cup to their league title

North Village Rams are vying to complete a clean sweep of Corona League trophies when they lock horns with Robin Hood in the Corona Cup final at Goose Gosling Field tonight.

Village, who claimed the league title, are the defending Corona Cup champions after last season’s 2-1 victory over Hood, and the two sides will meet again in a final between the teams that finished first and second in the table.

This season Village proved themselves to be the team to beat, winning the Charity Shield over defending league champions Tuff Dogs back in September, and then finishing a point ahead of Hood in the league.

Randy Spence, the Village captain, insists that the Corona League has been more about playing good football for the team’s players who are enjoying themselves after stepping away from the Premier Division.

“You’re talking about a core group of guys who have won everything and are products of North Village who are out there playing football,” said Spence, at 44 the team’s oldest player.

“Aljame Zuill is our leading scorer with about 20 goals, but it has been a collective thing and everybody in the team has been scoring, even our defenders.”

Village finished with 44 points from their 18 games, winning 14, drawing two and losing two. B&V United finished a creditable third place in their debut season, while defending champions, Tuff Dogs, had to settle for fourth.

Despite Ralph Bean, the Premier Division’s player-coach, returning to the top flight midway through the season, Village still managed to score 79 goals in the Corona League this season to top the scoring charts, six ahead of Hood which could make for a high-scoring final.

“This season we had new signings come in like Jemeiko Jennings, Vernon Tankard and Tariq Jennings and give us the depth that we needed,” Spence said.

“Last season we didn’t have much depth and ran out of legs so we weren’t really in the league running but up for the cup. With the new signings, North Village products, we were able to keep the ball, control most games and we’ve got an out and out striker in Aljame.”

Other Village players this season include Javon Thomas, Matthew Madeiros, goalkeepers Dion Ball and Zane Hendrickson, Andrew Rahman, Kaiwon Dill and Kofi Dill.

“We just want to go out there and have a good game, a good time and let the result fall where it falls,” Spence said. “We want to play good football, show some unity and good team spirit.

“Dion Ball has been our No 1 goalkeeper and has been a tremendous help because we didn’t have a ‘keeper last season. Zane, the other ‘keeper, came out halfway through the season while Andrew Rahman has been a rock in the centre of our midfield.

“Kofi Dill showed up in the big games when we needed him. In fact the whole team has been awesome.”

The final, which starts at 7pm, will be followed by an end-of-season presentation in the BAA clubhouse.
