Wells opens his account

First goal of the season: Nahki Wells

Nahki Wells opened his scoring account for the season in Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw at home to Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship at the weekend.

The Bermuda striker put Huddersfield ahead in the tenth minute when he ran on to Ishmael Miller’s rebounded shot and coolly fired past David Raya, the Blackburn goalkeeper.

Blackburn earned a share of the spoils when substitute Nathan Delfouneso, the former Aston Villa striker, struck on the hour mark.

Chris Powell, the Huddersfield manager, said he was delighted with his team’s response after losing their opening two games of the season against Hull City in the league and Notts County in the Capital One Cup.

“I got the response I wanted from the start,” Powell said. “We were on the front foot and wanted the crowd with us but again we came up against a goalkeeper who has made some good saves.

“We had a good first period but Blackburn came into it in the second half and there was a lack of concentration for the goal.

“Both teams had lost their first two games and both teams will see this as a first point gained. This was important for our mindset.

“We are playing well in spells and we just have to do the best we can to get the three points from each game.”

Huddersfield take on Brighton & Hove Albion at home in the Championship tomorrow night.

Reggie Lambe played the entire match in Mansfield Town’s 2-0 victory away to Notts County in League Two on Friday.

Chris Clements opened the scoring in the first half with a left-footed shot after Matt Green’s through ball.

Defender Ryan Tafazolli headed past Notts County goalkeeper Roy Carroll to double the lead in the closing minutes from Malvind Benning’s cross.

Mansfield, who are undefeated after two league games this season, are away to Accrington Stanley tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, Freddy Hall’s Limerick continued their resurgent form with a 3-2 win away to title-chasing Cork City on Friday to boost their chances of staving off relegation.

Limerick, who play in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, have won their last three matches and are at home to Longford Town tonight.

Hall captained Bermuda in the away leg of their second-round World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala in June.
