Anything possible after unpredictable start

Title favourites: Dandy Town put four past PHC last weekend (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

The top spot in the Premier Division will be up for grabs this weekend when Devonshire Colts, Dandy Town Hornets and Somerset Trojans look to continue their unbeaten starts to the new campaign.

Newly promoted Colts lead the standings with seven points from three matches while Hornets are a point behind, and with a game in hand.

Colts have turned a few heads with victories over Hamilton Parish and Devonshire Cougars while Town, who are perennial title contenders, have made a bright start.

Town hammered Robin Hood 5-1 before thrashing PHC Zebras 4-0, and will look for another victory on Sunday against bottom team Cougars.

Cougars beat Town last month in the Dudley Eve Trophy although nothing seems to be going right for them in the league.

Results have been difficult to predict in the opening weeks of the season, although there have been goals aplenty with 23 goals scored in the Premier Division in each of the first two rounds of matches.

Colts entertain North Village at Police Field as they play their first home match of the season. Colts are full of confidence after two wins and a draw, but they face a test against a Village side still looking for their first win after draws against PHC and Somerset.

Trojans opened the defence of their title with a win over Boulevard before drawing against Colts and Village, their five points leaving them in third place. Somerset are at home to a Southampton Rangers team that was thrashed 6-1 by Hood last weekend.

In Sunday’s other match PHC entertain Boulevard at PHC Field as they look for their first league win. Hood meet Hamilton Parish at Goose Gosling Field at 9pm on Saturday.

In the First Division, Flanagan’s Onions meet Young Men’s Social Club in a top-of-the-table clash at PHC Field.

Onions, who were relegated last season, lead the standings by three points with four teams, Social Club, St George’s, BAA Wanderers and St David’s, hot on their heels.

St David’s play Wolves at Lord’s while BAA host St George’s. Bottom teams Ireland Rangers and X-Roads are at home to Paget Lions and Somerset Eagles in the other matches.

n The Premier and First Division matches postponed on October 4 because of Hurricane Joaquin have been rescheduled for the weekend of December 20, the Bermuda Football Association has announced.

The switch has forced the matches in the PDL Festive Tournament third round to be moved from that date to Monday, December 21 with double-header night matches at Devonshire Recreation Club and BFA Field.

The Friendship and Shield tournament will be played in December leading up to the New Year’s Day finals at Somerset Cricket Club. Preliminary matches will take place on December 2 and 3 when PHC meet Town in the Friendship Trophy at Goose Gosling Field on the Wednesday, with holders Hood and Somerset playing the next night at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Quarterfinal matches will be played on Sunday, December 13 with double-headers at Bernard Park, Devonshire Recreation Club, Police Field and St John’s Field. Semifinals will be played on Boxing Day at Southampton Oval and December 27 at PHC Field.
