Discipline key to our success, says Fox

Kameron Fox, the BAA assistant coach, believes his side’s penalty shoot-out win over X-Roads Warriors in the First Division Shield was testament to his players’ discipline and appetite for hard work.

BAA won 4-1 on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 after extra-time, with neither team able to find the net in regulation time.

“We really put the work in to get this far,” said Fox, who was again taking charge of the team in the absence of Kenny Thompson, the BAA head coach.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy and we made it harder for ourselves because we didn’t take a few chances.

“I tell the team every week that if we keep missing chances the other team will have a chance to get back into the game.”

Fox, whose side thrashed St George’s Colts 4-0 in the semi-final last weekend, said his players had thoroughly deserved the win and believes it would serve as a boost to the club’s youth programme.

“The big thing about BAA is our discipline,” said the former St George’s head coach.

“Some of the clubs don’t really have that discipline or the same belief in their programme.

“What we teach is what we believe and that’s what the players believe. We’re very proud of the players and this win is all about them.”

Farid El Karfa, the X-Roads head coach, admitted losing the final on penalties was tough to take.

“Penalties really is the worst way to lose a final,” he said.

“We thought we could go on and win the game after the equaliser and I thought we may have had another penalty late on [in extra time].”

Despite the defeat, El Karfa was proud of his side’s effort and said their performances this season boded well for the future.

“I’m very proud of the boys,” he said “We have started from scratch and have built this team. We have come a long way in such a short time.”

“This should give us a good mental boost for the second half of the season and we just have to keep working hard.”
