Eagles get their wings clipped

Early bath: Onions defender Matthews was sent off

Flanagan’s Onions replaced Somerset Eagles at the top of the First Division despite being held to a 2-2 draw against BAA at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.

Onions moved into top position after Eagles faltered against Young Men’s Social Club who pulled off an upset victory at PHC Field yesterday.

Onions, who had defender Phil Matthews sent off in the 72nd minute after receiving a second booking for dissent, appeared to be in control with a 2-0 advantage after Gavin Thomason and Bron Turner converted in the 33rd and 49th minutes.

However, BAA eventually hit back in the 55th minute through Morricko Iris who sliced the Onions’s lead to change the complexion of the match.

The visiting side nearly restored their two-goal advantage midway through the second half when they struck the post and had the ball cleared off of BAA’s goalline.

Those missed opportunities came back to haunt Onions as Zeon Robinson equalised for BAA from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute after a handball.

Onions strongly protested referee Antoine Augustus’s decision to award the penalty, with Matthews receiving his marching orders during the heat of the moment. Somerset Eagles’ First Division title suffered a dent when the former leaders were humbled 3-1 by ten-men Social Club at PHC Field.

Saki Tuzo gave the home side the lead in the tenth minute, which was further extended five minutes before the interval when the striker grabbed his second.

Eagles finally pulled one back when Anwar Telford netted in the 65th minute.

However, Clay Darrell killed the game off ten minutes from time with a breakaway goal.

Social Club ended the game a man short after Tuzo received his marching orders.

Quincy Paynter, the Social Club coach, said: “I think the boys played well. We have been holding down the home court for a while and I think we transitioned well from offence to defence and took our chances well.

“Once we went a man down I think the team defended well. We sat behind the ball and got the job done.”

Marlon Rojas, the Eagles coach, blamed his team’s first league loss since last November on poor defending.

“From the get-go we gave away soft chances and paid the penalty for it,” he said.

St George’s kept alive their promotion hopes with a 2-1 victory over X-Roads at Garrison Field after scoring two late goals. X-Roads took the lead in the 70th minute through Michael Cardwell before St George’s equalised from the penalty spot in the 86th minute through David Signor after a handball.

Play was held up in stoppage time for a wrist injury to Mason O’Brien after a foul by Sage Blair Paynter. From the additional time added on, St George’s snatched a dramatic winner through Jarazinho Bassett to stay in the hunt.

Wolves edged Ireland Island Rangers 3-2 at Malabar Field where two goals in a minute in the first half gave Wolves a comfortable 2-0 lead. Raymond Butterfield opened the scoring in the 31st minute before Mikeal Bean added the second a minute later.

Kirt Brown pulled a goal back for Ireland Rangers in the 48th minute before Kyle Brangman made it 3-1 for the visiting side a minute later. Walter Webb pulled a goal back for the home side in the 77th minute.
