Lightbourne: title race is already over

Conceded title: Lightbourne expects Dandy Town to have secured the Premier Division sooner rather than later (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Barring a miracle, the Premier Division title will be won by Dandy Town for the fourth time in seven seasons in the next couple of weeks.

And it could happen on Monday night if the Hornets beat Boulevard at Police Field tomorrow and Cougars win against Robin Hood the following night at Devonshire Rec.

Even Kyle Lightbourne, the coach of second-place Robin Hood, admits the title race is all but over with Dandy Town leading by seven points and with only four games remaining.

An eighth Town title, with four in the past seven seasons seems inevitable, and even if the results go the other way the league will still be Town’s to lose.

“Dandy Town need just one more victory and I can see them getting that victory between now and the end of the season,” said Lightbourne after his team thrashed Hamilton Parish in the FA Cup quarter-final replay on Thursday night.

“We blew our chance against Devonshire Colts, for sure, it was just a bad day all-round for us. Colts deserved it on the day and I just hope my team can fight to the end.”

Cougars recently beat Town at home and with their confidence high and the threat of relegation behind them, Kwame Steede’s side will be free to express themselves.

“Cougars are coming off a good run,” Lightbourne said. “I remember saying when they were something like ten points adrift that two or three wins and you are back in it.”

Lightbourne warned about Cougars back in late October when he said: “On any given day anybody can beat anybody. I look at Devonshire Cougars who haven’t won a league game yet, losing by the odd goal against Rangers and PHC, but they are the only team to beat Dandy Town [Dudley Eve] so far.

“Cougars may be the bottom team but they have the ability to win three games in a row.”

Hood looked quite threatening against Parish on Thursday, taking a commanding lead in the first half with three goals in twelve minutes. In the end Lejuan Simmons netted a hat-trick and Nathan Peskett two in the 5-1 win.

Hood were missing goalkeeper Jason Simons as former Bermuda international Timmy Figureido filled in admirably. Antwan Russell, too, was missing after being taken out of the game against Colts on Sunday with seven minutes left and Hood’s three substitutions already made.

“Antwan has had a few personal issues but he’ll be back playing for us soon,” Lightbourne said.

One Hood player looking forward to the visit to Devonshire Rec is Darius Cox, the former Cougars defender.

Steede is delighted with the way the team has played since the turn of the year, even going into Trojans territory and taking all three points on Thursday night for their fifth win in a row. The win moves them into a tie with North Village for fourth place.

“Overall, we guys have worked on a lot of the structure,” said Steede. “We are trying to catch teams on the counter-attack and right now I think it’s working for us.

“We’re playing compact and it’s our type of football and we like it.

“We have also been working on clinical finishing and against Somerset in the first half I think that’s the only thing that let us down. In the first half we were competing, it was just we couldn’t finish the job.

“Now if you look at it, we have scored almost thirty goals second half of the season and let in just three to five goals. We also haven’t been beaten, and so we’re on the trot.”

Bottom team Hamilton Parish, the last team to beat Cougars, on December 20, will be relegated tomorrow if they lose at home to Somerset and Devonshire Colts beat PHC at PHC Field.
