Strange twist in race for promotion
The First Division promotion race had an interesting twist to it yesterday when the top match at White Hill Field was called off after St David’s arrived at the ground for the match with Somerset Eagles without their players’s cards.
A grace period was given by Cassandra Trott, the referee, to see if the cards would arrive, before finally calling the match off at 12.45pm, 15 minutes past the scheduled starting time.
St David’s, third in the standings, are likely to lose the points and with it their chance of promotion as they trailed second-placed Eagles by four points going into the match.
St David’s needed victory in that match to keep within reach of the top two teams and with only two games left against St George’s and Flanagan’s Onions.
Onions, meanwhile, secured their spot in the top flight when they came from behind to beat X-Roads 4-2 at Garrison Field. X-Roads, third from bottom, looked determined to have a say in the promotion race by taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Daniel Baker and Jorge Sanchez in the ninth and 49th minutes.
However, Onions turned it around with three goals in the space of eight minutes before Treshaun Smith completed his hat-trick with the last goal in the 82nd minute. Peter Robey pulled the first goal back for Onions in the 55th minute, before Smith opened his account in the two minutes later.
Smith added his second in the 63rd from close range to put Onions in front for the first time, and then made certain of the points with a well-taken header from a Jonathan Knight cross eight minutes from the end.
St George’s kept their slim hopes alive with a 9-0 thrashing of bottom team Ireland Rangers at Wellington Oval, where Jarazinho Bassett netted four times in the first half.
St George’s led 7-0 at the break with Adam Turner scoring a tenth minute penalty to open the scoring. Bassett scored a minute later before Philip Anderson added a third in the 28th.
Bassett netted again in the 33rd and 39th minutes to complete his hat-trick before further goals in the 44th and 45th minutes from David Signor and Bassett kept the home side on course for their biggest win of the season.
Rangers out until St George’s scored twice more in the 82nd and 87th minutes through Macai Simmons and Sage Blair Paynter.
Young Men’s Social Club also put nine past Ireland Rangers in January when they won 9-1. Social Club won yesterday beating Paget 3-1 at PHC Field.
