Wilkinson hails captain’s influence
Jomar Wilkinson, the Dandy Town Hornets coach, hailed the maturity of Angelo Simmons after the team captain smashed six goals against Hamilton Parish at St John’s Field yesterday.
Town, who won the Premier Division last month, such has been their dominance this season, finished their league campaign in emphatic style with a 10-3 victory over Parish who had already been relegated.
Simmons started the rout in the first minute and continued to punish a porous Parish defence that offered very little in the way of resistance throughout the one-sided affair, which felt more like a pre-season friendly than a league game.
“It was a very unselfish performance by Angelo,” Wilkinson said, whose side were presented with the Premier Division title by Mark Wade, the Bermuda Football Association vice-president, after the match.
“He scored six but I think he was involved in all the other four goals as well. It was a real captain’s performance from him today.”
Wilkinson said Simmons, who finished as Town’s leading scorer with 16 goals, had grown into the captain’s role as the season progressed.
“He’s embraced the role captain this season, his first wearing the armband, and he’s definitely been one of the main leaders in the dressing room.
“He’s still got a long way to go [as a captain] but I’m pleased with the way he’s led the team this season.”
With the title already wrapped up after his team’s 2-0 home win over Somerset Trojans last month, Wilkinson took the opportunity to blood teenagers Eusebio Blankendal, Adray Moore and second-half substitute Djaje Hart.
“I was very pleased with the performances of all the debutants,” said Wilkinson, who celebrated his third title as Town coach this season.
“I’ve been very proud of the whole team this season and we’ve gone from strength to strength.
“We’ve got a very young team and I feel we have a long way to go before we reach our potential. Hopefully we can keep this group of players together and keep getting better and better.”
Wilkinson added: “We knew what we had to do today against a side that had already been relegated. We had to show the right mentality and didn’t want to switch off because we had already won the title.”
Hornets will now look ahead to their FA Cup semi-final against PHC Zebras at Police Field next weekend, with the Double firmly in their sights.
“We’re not finished yet,” Wilkinson said. “We’ve got an important game against PHC in the FA Cup and have to stay focused for that.”
North Village’s 1-0 win over Devonshire Cougars at Bernard Park was the only other Premier Division game to be played yesterday. Pierre Smith gave Richard Todd’s side the victory to finish the season on a high note.
“There are some things we have to work on, mental aspects and changing the mindset of players,” Todd said. “But it’s good to finish on a positive note, we need to try to look forward to next season, to try to improve and take it one step further.
“Last year we were out of the Dudley Eve and in a relegation fight, but we weren’t quite in that [this season]. Players have to be patient and continue to put in the work and if we do that we’ll continue to move forward. I think we need to be tougher mentally to be able to handle periods of adversity.”
Yesterday’s other Premier Division matches, Boulevard v Devonshire Colts at Police Field, Southampton Rangers v PHC Zebras at PHC Field, and Somerset Trojans v Robin Hood at Somerset Cricket Club were cancelled because of bad weather.
