Bermuda’s cup hopes hit by injury to Bascome

Bermuda’s Caribbean Cup second round preparations have suffered a setback with the injury to team midfielder Drewonde Bascome.

The Dandy Town player and son of Andrew Bascome, the national head coach, limped off hurt in Town’s 2-1 FA Cup final defeat to Robin Hood at the National Sports Centre last weekend.

Bascome is believed to have aggravated a foot injury he suffered last year and was scheduled to have an MRI this week.

In February, the player caused concern after he was stretchered off with the aid of an oxygen mask after experiencing breathing problems in Town’s 2-1 win in the Premier Division away to PHC Zebras.

Bascome was taken by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after lying on the pitch after a tackle for a worrying period of time while receiving treatment from both benches and later released.

On a more positive note, Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, has strongly suggested that he will be available for Bermuda’s Caribbean Cup second-round matches against French Guiana and Dominican Republic in June.

“I have no reason not to be, but as always I have to do what’s best for me and my career,” Wells said.

“If it’s not harmful in any way and I’m fit, then I will put myself forward absolutely.

“We have two fixtures and I want to play a role as much as I can, regardless if that’s for one or both of the games.

“I’m nursing some knocks at the moment, but I don’t see that being an issue with time to recover.”

The addition of Wells would serve as a boost in Bermuda’s bid to advance to the next round of the competition.

Rai Simons, of Chesterfield, and Freddy Hall, the Limerick goalkeeper, are two others who could feature for Bermuda in the second round.

“We are having discussions with many of the overseas players but haven’t finalised anything as yet,” Maurice Lowe, the BFA technical director, said.

“Everything is in preliminary stages, they are finishing up their seasons and we’re allowing them to do that while having discussions with some of them.”

Bermuda take on French Guiana on June 1 at the Stade Municipal Dr Edmard Lame in Cayenne before returning to the island to face Dominican Republic at the National Stadium three days later.

Dominican Republic, who are ranked 18 places above Bermuda in the Fifa world rankings, finished top of their qualifying group on goal difference after losing 2-1 away to Curaçao before a 2-0 victory over Barbados.

Bermuda advanced from the preliminary round after finishing as runners-up on goal difference behind group winners French Guiana, who they defeated 2-1 at the National Stadium last month.

The second round will involve five groups, with the winners and four best runners-up advancing to the third round to be held from October 3 to 9.

Jamaica, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago have received a bye to the third round because of their involvement in World Cup qualifying matches.

• The Bermuda Football Association second Merit Awards and season prizegiving, which was scheduled for tonight, has been postponed.

The decision was due to unforseen circumstances and a new date is being finalised and will be communicated to the public in due course, the BFA said.
