Bermuda facing tough challenge against Haiti
Bermuda will renew acquaintances with Haiti when the two teams meet in today’s Caribbean Football Union Under-20 Championship semi-finals at the Stadion Ergilio Hato in Curaçao.
Bermuda reached the last four after finishing as runners-up in group A while Haiti topped group B with an unbeaten record.
Haiti defeated Bermuda 3-0 in the previous qualifying round and are the firm favourites going into today’s clash.
Kyle Lightbourne, the Bermuda coach, admits his players have their work cut out against a very organised Haiti but believes they can be equal to the task.
“Haiti are a very good team and it’s going to be a challenge for us,” Lightbourne said. “Haiti have looked the best team that we have seen here, but they are beatable.
“They tick all the boxes at this level. They are strong, aggressive, know when to play long and short and so they have a good balance in their team and everybody can handle the ball.
“But we are going to work on a game plan and hope that we can execute it. We have to be aware of their strength, try and take them out of their rhythm and need our guys to be playing at their maximum.”
Lightbourne’s side beat group favourites St Kitts and Nevis 3-1 in their opening match, were held to a 1-1 draw with Curaçao in their second before losing 3-2 against group winners Antigua and Barbuda.
Bermuda clinched the remaining semi-final spot on goal difference over third-placed St Kitts and Nevis to advance to the Concacaf Under-20 Championships in Costa Rica in February.
Bermuda will be without Knory Scott, who is suspended after being sent off against Antigua, while Paul Douglas is doubtful because of a foot injury.
“Paul got injured in the last game in which he had a big say in central midfield,” Lightbourne said. “He took a knock on his foot and he’s fifty-fifty. But we will have a close look at him in training [yesterday] and then go from there.”
