Nathan Trott kept a clean sheet to cap an outstanding and memorable debut for England Under-20 in their 3-0 defeat of Holland in an international friendly yesterday.

With a handful of relatives watching from the stands in Telford, Bermudian goalkeeper Trott repaid head coach Keith Downing for granting him his first international cap for England with an impenetrable display between the posts.

Playing for England is something that the West Ham United player has been striving for and he was delighted to finally get the nod after being an unused substitute on several occasions for England Under-19s.

“Unreal, waited a year for it, didn’t feel real for the first 20 minutes,” Trott told The Royal Gazette. “It’s always a good feeling to get called up for England, currently the best team in Europe in our age group so it’s an honour.”

Trott was a part of the England Under-19 squad that won this summer’s Uefa European Championship in Georgia after beating Portugal 2-1 in the final. He was an unused substitute throughout the tournament, but played his part on the training pitch, his inclusion in Downing’s squad arriving just months after switching his international allegiance from Bermuda to England.

Trott has established himself as the No 1 for West Ham United’s Under-23 squad and is taking full advantage of the opportunity to pick the brain of the club’s first team goalkeeper and England international Joe Hart, who is on loan from Manchester City.

“With Joe’s experience with England and in club football, you’ve only got the option to follow what he does and he’s a great character on and off the pitch,” Trott told the club’s website.

“He also made a lot of appearances at the younger age groups for England too, so that’s also something to aspire to do myself.

“He is a great professional and these are people that, as a young player, you must look up to. The way he commands and leads the team is on another level. He’s also a top class goalkeeper!”
