Osagi Bascome, Roger Lee and Jahquil Hill have been confirmed for Bermuda’s international friendly against Barbados at the National Stadium next weekend.

The overseas-based trio have made themselves available for the match against the Barbadians, who are 21 places above Bermuda in the world rankings.

“Jahquil, Osagi and Roger have been confirmed, which is a good boost,” Kyle Lightbourne, the interim Bermuda coach, said.

Goalkeeper Hill and defender Lee are at present playing non-League football in England at Rushall Olympic and Loughborough Dynamo respectively, while midfielder Bascome has returned to Spain since being released by Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City.

Hill and Bascome were members of the Bermuda squad that competed in the Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Costa Rica in February.

Lightbourne, who has been appointed caretaker coach after Andrew Bascome stepped down in August, said he expects his side to win while playing good football.

“First and foremost, we want to be competitive and win the game,” said Lightbourne, who previously coached Bermuda from 2005 to 2007. “It’s classed as a friendly, but we want to play well and do all the right things and win.

“We want to be able to cope with whatever they throw at us and be able to take the game to them.

“According to reports coming out of Barbados, they are bringing in a younger squad but they have been together for quite some time and get to play a lot of games, so we have to be mindful of that.

“As for Bermuda’s preparations, we have a nucleus of players training and we’re starting to implement what we want in that match.”

Bermuda and Barbados have each won twice in the five previous meetings between the countries.

Bermuda won 3-0 when Barbados last visited the island nearly a decade ago.

“Bermuda have got some pretty good results recently, so we are not taking anything for granted,” Edwyn Wood, the Barbados Football Association general secretary, said. “We expect to have a tough challenge but we also anticipate the team will do well against Bermuda.”

The Barbados squad will include semi-professional and college players who are based in the United States.

“The team has been in training for quite a while and has had a few friendlies so preparations are going good,” Wood added.

Bermuda are scheduled to face Barbados in the Caribbean next year as part of a home-and-away arrangement.

• LeiLanni Nesbeth scored in each half as Bermuda drew 2-2 with Trinidad & Tobago in the Concacaf Caribbean Women’s Under-17 final qualifying round at the Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, yesterday evening.

The Lady Gombey Warriors take on Jamaica tomorrow, with the winners of their group facing Haiti, Puerto Rico or Cuba in the final on Sunday.

The finalists and winners of the third-place match, played between the runners-up of each group, will join Nicaragua, the host nation, Canada, Mexico and the United States in the tournament finals early next year.
