Village run riot against Lions

On target: Village's Pierre Smith

Paget Lions 0 North Village 4

North Village picked up three valuable points as they defeated Paget Lions at Southampton Oval yesterday.

Jaizel Smith-DeShields led from the front, scoring a goal in each half, while Marcelos Thomas and Pierre Smith notched one a piece.

Randy Spence, the Village coach, was pleased with the result and the performance. “Once we scored the early goal, all we had to do was maintain our discipline and I thought the team did that well today.

“We then added a few more goals to come away with a comfortable victory, and that should do a lot for the team’s confidence moving into the second half of the season.”

Within ten minutes Village were ahead when Thomas found the bottom corner with a left-foot shot after receiving a back-heel pass from Smith-DeShields inside the box. Moments later, Paget had an opportunity to equalise, when Village goalkeeper Detre Bell was unable to cleanly collect a low drive.

The rebound fell to the feet of Akale Bean, who was unable to steady himself, slicing his effort wide from a good position.

Paget were then forced into an early substitution as the injured Kenneth Durrant was replaced by Sergio Richardson midway through the half.

Bean had another chance when a deflected shot landed at his feet, but the striker was again unable to sort his feet and his weak effort was saved by Bell.

Village regained the momentum as Terryn Fray went close with a header from a corner that came off the crossbar. On the stroke of half-time Smith-DeShields was beneficiary of a clever dummy from Pierre Smith that beat the Paget defence and left him clean through. The young forward made no mistake with his shot from the edge of the box that beat the advancing goalkeeper. Smith-DeShields and Smith combined for Village’s third goal. Smith received a through ball down the right and his square pass was met by Smith-DeShields who flicked his effort into the net with the heel of his boot.

Village found a fourth from the penalty spot in the 70th minute when Smith was fouled by a chasing defender after rounding the goalkeeper. Smith buried his effort put the game out of reach.
