Trott top stopper in English leagues
Goalkeeper Nathan Trott has thrived since joining AFC Wimbledon on loan and has the statistics to prove it.
According to playerstats.com, the world’s largest football database, the Bermudian goalkeeper made 93 saves during the first half of the 2019-20 campaign, the most by any goalkeeper among the top four tiers of English football.
Lee Nichols, of MK Dons, had the second most saves with 91 with Dillon Phillips, of Charlton Athletic, rounding off the top three with 90. Only saves made in league matches were taken into consideration.
Trott has made 24 appearances and also kept three cleansheets since joining SkyBet League One side Wimbledon on a season-long loan from Premier League side West Ham United at the start of the season, making his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Accrington Stanley last August.
The son of former St George’s and Devonshire Colts goalkeeper Dwayne Trott initially signed a 2½-year deal with West Ham in January 2016, which has since been extended twice until 2022.
Trott made 12 appearances during a injury-hampered last season for West Ham, ten in Premier League 2 and twice in the Checkatrade Trophy, as well being named in the East London club’s senior squad on three occasions.
He put another feather in his cap after earning the Premier League 2 Save of the Season Award for the second time in three years.
The former BAA player received the honour for his superb save in a 2-1 win away to Liverpool in September of 2018 playing for the Premier League 2 side.
West Ham signed goalkeepers Roberto and David Martin on a free transfer last summer to provide back-up to No 1 Lukasz Fabianski after the release of former No 2 Adrian, which paved the way for Trott to go out on loan to gain experience.
Trott has also featured for England at youth level. He was a member of the England Under-19 squad who won the 2017 European Championship in Georgia and has also been capped six times for England Under-20s.
The 21-year-old was named in the England Under-20 team for the defence of their Toulon tournament title in France last summer, but was later ruled out because of injury.
Trott also earned a first call-up to the England Under-21 squad ahead of their Under-21 European Championship qualifiers against Turkey and Kosovo last September, which he did not feature in.
