Robinson hails West team’s spot-on effort

Naquita Robinson, the West head coach, did not expect a penalty shoot-out to decide the Senior School Girls’ All-Star game at North Field, National Sports Centre, but said she was happy with her team’s performance.After the match ended scoreless on Saturday, East won 4-3 on penalties after a wonderful save by goalkeeper Kayla Caldwell in sudden death to deny Satia Burchall.“I expected game to be won in regulation,” Robinson said. “I was very pleased with the effort of all the girls who were chosen for this match.”Antoine Augustus, the East coach, was especially delighted with his team’s desire in the match.“They showed a lot of heart,” the CedarBridge coach said. “They always wanted to win.”Augustus pointed out the performances of East MVP Emily Cabral and Ka’Ri Richards.“I haven’t really coached Emily,” he added. “She had a very strong game and led from the front.“As for Ka’Ri, she is in her last year at CBA. She was an important part of our midfield today, and she made a lot happen for us going forward.”East took control of the early stages, with midfielder Cabral pulling the strings and encouraging her team forward.West created a few chances from set pieces but the first half was marred with poor decisions in the final third by both sides.Tayla Horan had the best chance of the first half for the West, but she skied her shot midway through the period.Noah Autmezguine thought she had opened the scoring for the blue side, but West goalkeeper Terrinae Trott made a fantastic save with her feet early in the second half.Adae Gibbons whipped in a tantalising cross for East midway through second half, but none of her attackers were on hand to finish. Jahde Simmons created a brief opening for herself with a lovely turn past an East defender, but she hit the far post with her low shot.As the match went into the shoot-out, West won the coin toss and chose to kick first. Berkeley student K’Xiyae Gibbins missed their first effort. Autmezguine then missed her attempt, hitting against the bar. At the end of the regulation five shots, the teams were tied 3-3. However, Caldwell made a fabulous save to deny Burchall in the West’s first sudden-death effort. Striker Asrael Basden scored to end a very entertaining girls’ showcase.Meanwhile, in the main event, West came from a goal down to win the Senior Boys’ All-Star match 3-2 on penalties.Ajani Lee opened the scoring from a rebound after striker Victor Captillo had his shot well blocked after just four minutes. As East continued to dominate early stages, Captillo drove his shot over the bar a few minutes later.As West started to grow into the game, East made a double sub to stem their control. Just before the stroke of half-time, West equalised. Tre McCallan took advantage of a distribution error by East goalkeeper Coolridge Fubler, rounding the Berkeley student and slotting in.The second half began as the first half ended. The West dominated early possession, but failed to get past the aggressive East midfield. The teams were cancelling each other put at this point.East midfielder Allan Martin was booked midway through the half for a hard tackle on Zaire Smith. Martin later felt confident he had put East ahead for a second time, but West goalkeeper Kameron Harvey made a diving save low to his far right.In the final moments, Joshua Joseph had a shot pushed wide by Fubler. The resulting corner was comfortably cleared by the East defence. Neither team created a chance of note in final five minutes, with the match ending 1-1 in regulation.In the second shoot-out in Senior All-Star matches, West once again went first. Amon Simons placed his shot well beyond the diving Fubler. Eljaz Shakir placed his shot towards the far corner, but it was at straightforward height for Harvey.After Samori Greenidge scored, East had a mountain to climb with every subsequent kick.Wahhaj Shakir was unlucky to watch his shot just tipped off the bar by Harvey.Zaire Smith scored to make it 3-0, but Captillo had to score to keep East in the match, which he did.McCallan, who scored equaliser for West, scored the decisive kick to clinch victory for his side.
