Lewis: Family spurred me on

Zeiko Lewis says he is thrilled to have earned USL Championship Player of the Week honours and has vowed to keep striving to fulfil his potential.

The Charleston Battery winger earned the accolade for spearheading his team's dramatic 3-2 victory at home to Atlanta United II last weekend.

Lewis netted a brace including the game-winner in second-half stoppage time, to complete his team's impressive comeback at the Patriot´s Point Soccer Complex.

“It's an honour to receive player of the week award in my league,” Lewis told The Royal Gazette. “However, I want to keep improving every game and continue to grow throughout the season and my career.”

Charleston trailed 2-0 early in the second half but pulled a goal back through Mauro Cichero before Lewis stamped his authority on the match with two well-taken goals.

The USL Championship's Player of the Week is selected by the USL National Media Panel, comprised of representatives from each media market in the Championship, with Lewis earning 47 per cent of the ballot for his display. The 26-year-old had added incentive as his parents Troy and Nicole Lewis and sister Zekiah were in attendance.

“They definitely were motivating me and pushing me throughout the game,” Lewis said. “I heard them very clearly as we have a limited crowd.

“It was amazing to have my family in town. I don't get to see them very often, so when I do it makes me happy. On top of that they came to an entertaining game.”

The victory put Battery in second-place in group H and firmly in play-off contention.

“The team has had a fast-learning season. We have learnt about new players and ourselves in our short campaign,” Lewis said. “We're growing every day to having better performances.”

The USL Championship season was suspended in March because of Covid-19 and resumed in July under strict health and safety protocols.

“Playing amid Covid- 19 has been tough,” Lewis admits. “There are a lot of strict protocols that we have to follow. It makes it difficult at times, however just as the rest of the world needs to adapt, we do too.”
