Midfielder Demetre Daniels netted two goals as North Village climbed from sixth to fourth in the Premier Division with victory over Southampton Rangers last night at Goose Gosling Field.

It was the first win of the season for Village, who netted all their goals in the second half after Rangers held their own in the opening period.

Rangers came close to opening the scoring midway in the first half when Dion Stovell’s long-range free kick caught goalkeeper Detre Bell off-guard before the effort went just over the crossbar.

It was a head injury to Stovell in the first minute of the second half that proved to be the turning point in the match for Rangers, as the striker went off for treatment and after returning was replaced in the 57th minute, still feeling the effects of the head blow.

By then, Village had already taken the lead with Daniels opening his account in the 50th minute with a shot from 25 yards that beat goalkeeper Dwayne Adams, the Rangers’ player-coach.

Rai Simons added a second four minutes later when he turned and ran towards goal before smashing a shot from 25 yards past Adams.

Kamau Leverock went close to adding a third for Village on the hour mark, Adams tipping his effort against the far post as Village sought more goals.

Two more goals came in the final 10 minutes when Daniels outpaced the Rangers’ defence to make it 3-0 and then substitute Jaizel Smith-DeShields closed out the scoring with a good finish from a sharp angle on the left side.
