Willie Clemons happy with form after extending goal streak in Stowmarket Town’s cup win

Top form: Willie Clemons scored his second goal in as many games for Stowmarket Town in their 2-0 win over Lowestoft Town in the Turner Hyundai Suffolk Premier Cup

Willie Clemons extended his goal streak and solid form of late to help Stowmarket Town advance in the Turner Hyundai Suffolk Premier Cup.

The Bermuda international netted the home side’s first goal in a comfortable 2-0 win over Lowestoft Town, who play a level above them in the English football pyramid, in a first round cup tie at Greens Meadow on Tuesday night.

Clemons broke the deadlock in the tenth minute after weaving his way into the box and slotting home with confidence for his fourth of the season and second in successive matches.

Luke Brown, the Stowmarket striker, then doubled his team’s advantage in the 58th minute after being afforded time and space in the box to rifle a shot into the roof of the net and put the game further beyond the visitors’ reach.

“We played well against a organised side and showed the quality we have in the squad,” Clemons told The Royal Gazette. “It was a well deserved win.”

The Stowmarket winger reckons his team could’ve won by a wider margin with more clinical finishing.

“It could’ve been a couple more goals in the game,” Clemons said. “I personally had chances to get more goals but happy with the win.

“The cup gives us the platform to showcase ourselves as a team and individuals and a good measuring stick ahead of our aspirations for this year and the next.”

The 27-year-old is also delighted to have scored in successive matches having also got his name on the score sheet in his team’s 4-1 demolition of Tilbury in the Isthmian League North Division at the weekend.

“Happy to score and be playing well consistently at the moment and looking to keep the form going,” he added.

Clemons’ compatriot and national team team-mate Reggie Lambe also started and played the entire match.

Stowmarket will now face Lambe’s former club Ipswich Town in the second round of the competition.

Lambe was influential in Clemons joining the club last October having had his contract at former Swedish club Dalkurd terminated in December of 2020.

“Coming out (to England) I had an slight plan, a trial in the works that didn't go as planned,” Clemons said.

“But luckily I'm based not too far from Reggie and he said I could come and train at his club to keep some sort of regular football activity. I did a few sessions and basically it went from there.

“It’s nice to have a good base here with my girlfriend, Reggie and his family and a previous teacher of mine, who's also living nearby, which have all been a blessing in helping me acclimate quickly.”

Stowmarket are flying high in the Isthmian League North Division. They are presently third in the standings, level on points with second placed Aveley, and two adrift of leaders Canvey Island.

Paul Musgrove’s team is back in action when they host mid-table Heybridge Swifts at Greens Meadow in the league on Saturday.
